John Lewis Christmas Advert 2011 – YouTube.

This year’s John Lewis TV advert for Christmas is wonderful.

If you’ve not seen it, it follows a young boy in the run up to Christmas.  He is desperate for the days to pass by and he does all he can to make time pass faster.  He is desperate for Christmas day to come.  His parents lovingly encourage him to wait.

Finally, Christmas morning comes and the boy sits upright in bed.  He jumps down, and runs straight past the pile of presents at the bottom of his bed to his wardrobe where he finds one other present.

He grabs it with great excitement, walks out of his bedroom and into that of his parents.  He stands proudly with the present and then gives it to them.  The advert finishes with the line:

For gifts you can’t wait to give.

The advert has become an “internet sensation” and the reason that it’s so popular is that it’s the Christmas that we really all want isn’t it?  We want a Christmas that is generous and not greedy, selfless rather than selfish, fun and not fraught.

And that is what the first ever Christmas was.  We remember God the Father giving his Son, Jesus, for the world.  Jesus was a gift God couldn’t wait to give.  It wasn’t just Mary counting the days until Jesus was born as a baby that first Christmas; God was doing it too – he was desperate to give the greatest gift of all.

Can we encourage you to join us and celebrate at All Saints’ this Christmas?  We can promise you an oasis from the jobs to do, lists to finish, presents to buy.  Come for a little bit more of the “real” Christmas and come and hear more about the gift God couldn’t wait to give.

Here’s what we’re doing this Christmas:

Wednesday 13th December at 8pm we’ve Carols in The Ship – Come and join us for a drink, Carol singing and a Christmas thought

Friday 23rd December at 4pm we’ve our Christingle Service in All Saints’ Church – Christmas fun for all the family

Christmas Eve at 6.30pm come for Carols by Candlelight in All Saints’ Church – Readings and Carols followed by mulled wine and mince pies

Christmas Morning  at 11am – Short Family Service in All Saints’ Church

We’d really love to see you.

Happy Christmas,

Mark
